SUSTAINABLE BOPP SOLUTIONS FOR LABELS

Innovia Films had planned to showcase their range of BOPP facestock films that offer environmental benefits when replacing alternative products. BOPP films provide a positive balance of functionality and environmental impact versus many other plastics, and paper materials.

RayoForm™ EUP60, a white BOPP film for in-mould labelling (IML). Produced in Europe at one of our state-of-the art production facilities, EUP60 is a very high opacity, high yield product, having a density as low as 0.55 g/cm3. Combined with its specially formulated and printable matte surface, EUP60 is engineered to give outstanding high-speed sheet feeding and adhesion for both UV and oxidative inks. When used on small-to-medium size, PP or PE containers, an all-polyolefin mono-material container can be produced. This enables the final pack to be fully recyclable, meeting the Plastic Recyclers Europe packaging design recommendations.

Recently developed, a uniquely engineered uncoated cavitated, brilliant white gloss BOPP base film, Rayoface™ QB designed for pressure sensitive labelling (PSL) applications. The film is available today in both 57 and 40 micron thicknesses and has a coating receptive surface on one side. This allows customers to add their own preferred topcoat. This film gives both superb economics, a high yield, extremely high opacity of 91% and is EU food contact compliant.

Joining the line-up, is our brand-new, low-density polyolefin floatable shrink sleeve film, RayoFloat™ APO suitable for shrink sleeve labels and tamper evident applications. The film forms the basis to produce sustainable floatable shrink sleeves. This facilitates easy separation of labels from PET, HDPE and PP bottles and containers in the recycling process to enable bottle-to-bottle circularity. RayoFloat™ APO is a clear, uncoated shrink film that floats, as its density is <0.93 g/cm³. The film is also glossy, scuff resistant and printable, with a controlled TD shrinkage up to 65%. RayoFloat™ has been endorsed by the European PET Bottle Platform EPBP, although this film is perfect for use on a variety of HDPE and PP containers too.

BOPP linerless label films complete the Labelexpo line-up. They offer significant advantages over pressure sensitive labels and carton board sleeves for product protection. Around 30% of packaging weight and waste reduction can be achieved throughout the supply chain by switching to filmic labels. They provide excellent stiffness, are water and tear resistant. Our proven films for this application provide excellent conversion efficiencies, good cutability, stable registration and precise label application. Coupled with high adhesive compatibility, strong adhesive key and silicon compatibility as well as two side printability, and clean removal, its easy to see why they are popular. As an added bonus, if they are used on PET trays, then recyclability is also improved as the PP labels will float and separate from the PET tray during recycling. Win-win.
